Different types of foams and their uses

Foams are used in large number of industries in some form or other. Some special foam has been created to suit the needs of some industries.   Foam is also used as insulators while other are used to make absorbent sponges.  Here is the description of types of foam and their uses.

Polyether foam is light and absorbent foam. This type of foam is generally used for toys and cosmetics. It is used a cushions, providing protective layers in packaging, and in paint roller.  Polyester foam is also open cell foam, which means that it is light and comes in several densities. Mostly used in packaging, blocking sound, gaskets and in cushioning. This type of foam comes in fire resistance grades.

Ethafoam is denser than   polyether and polyester foam. This type of foam has excellent shock absorbing capacity that is why it is used in packaging electronic items, material handling and floatation applications. This type of foam is often laminated or extruded. Volara foam comes in an extruded material; its surface can come in laminated or combined with adhesive tapes. The volara foam is used in protective packaging, medical products, in insulations and in gaskets. This type of foam generally comes in rolls and its density can be from 2-12 pounds per cubic foot. 

Closed cell sponge rubber and open cell sponge rubber are two other foams. The closed cell sponge rubber is used for outdoor uses like electrical outlets, thermal insulation, industrial padding, weather stripping etc. This foam comes in rolls and sheets.  Open cell sponge rubber is highly resilient and is very dense. The special quality of this rubber is that it comes with anti skid and anti fatigue properties. It is used at places, where the rubber has to withstand lot of wear and tear.

cellulose is an  open–cell blended fibers and  is very spongy .it is often used in households as sponge in cleaning purposes  It comes in  foam combinations and with added non-woven fiber scrubbers.

Scrubber Foams are non abrasive foam, which can be either polyether or ester foam. This foam is added to the sponge for cleaning glass etc. Their use does not cause any abrasion on the delicate products that is why non abrasive scrubber foam is used for cleaning delicate items.
